In a world where societal norms often dictate the course of our lives, some stories shine as beacons of resilience and individuality. Ghungroo, a heartwarming short film, tells one such tale.

At its core, Ghungroo is about acceptance-of oneself and of others. The film, directed and produced by Shreya Shethia, follows Ragha, a young man who dares to defy gender norms by pursuing Kathak, a classical Indian dance form traditionally associated with women. As Ragha battles societal expectations and his own family’s lack of understanding, he embarks on a transformative journey of self-discovery, courage, and breaking barriers.

“My inspiration for Ghungroo stems from my own life,” shares Shreya. “Growing up, I often felt that many of my desires went unacknowledged and unaccepted by my family and friends. Additionally, my mother’s story influenced me deeply. She started learning Kathak later in life and attended beginner-level classes with kids, never letting societal expectations or her age hold her back. Her determination was my muse.”

While Shreya initially pursued a bachelor’s degree in business, the corporate world left her unfulfilled. It wasn’t until she discovered the art of photography, videography, and filmmaking that she found her true calling. After completing a master’s degree in film in the United States, she fully immersed herself in the craft, finding joy and excitement in every aspect of storytelling.

“My goal with Ghungroo is to convey the importance of respecting and accepting people as they are. Society often measures worth by outdated norms, but with a little support and trust, individuals can achieve incredible things,” explains Shreya.

The film’s production journey was no less remarkable. The picturesque locations, including a charming cottage in a village near Titwala, a 90s-style school, and a serene temple, added authenticity and depth to the story. “Finding the right locations was a challenge, but when everything clicked, it felt like magic,” Shreya recounts.

Currently, Ghungroo is making its rounds at film festivals, with plans for a broader release underway. “I’m in talks with a few platforms, and soon, the film will be available for everyone to enjoy,” reveals Shreya.

At its heart, Ghungroo is a story of perseverance, acceptance, and the beauty of being true to oneself. It’s a reminder that, no matter the obstacles, taking one step at a time can lead us to where we’re meant to be.

Stay tuned for Ghungroo-a film that promises to inspire and resonate with audiences everywhere.
